The eSafety Commissioner (eSafety) is Australia’s independent regulator for online safety.

eSafety’s purpose is to help safeguard all Australians from online harms and to promote safer, more positive online experiences.

eSafety approaches its work through the three lenses of prevention, protection, and proactive and systemic change:

  • prevention – through research, education programs and raising awareness
  • protection – through regulatory schemes and investigations, under the Online Safety Act. These include cyberbullying of children, image-based, abuse, adult cyber abuse and illegal and restricted content.
  • proactive and systemic change – by identifying emerging risks, ensuring industry minimises harm, and collaborating to lift overall standards.

eSafety recognises that improving online safety must be an international effort, because online interaction is not confined by national borders. Through its international work program, eSafety is engaging with Pacific Island stakeholders to share information on online safety regulation and education, and key challenges in the region, including technology facilitated gender-based violence and child online protection.
